Character's Personality:

While Nico may seem like a grumpy emo kid at times, there is a part of him that cares a great deal for the people in his life. Even when he was upset and angry at the loss of his sister he still didn't allow his emotions to physically lash out at the person who promised to keep her safe or seek revenge. He even accepted a half-sister and gave her a second chance to live, caring for her just as much as he cared for Bianca. When Nico befriends someone, he does everything in his power to protect them even if that means risking his own safety and even gets angry on their behalf. Despite feeling like an outcast everywhere, he crossed half the world to stop a war between two groups and went so far as to not kill anyone. Nico is the sort of person who cares about the people who get discarded just as much as he cares about those who are his friends.

For someone so young, Nico has faced horrific things alone and yet still kept his sanity. Even others have commented on how mentally strong he must be to have endured traveling through Tartarus and not going crazy or how much pain and suffering he carried with him was more than an entire Roman Legion. His mental fortitude is extremely strong so long as it's only his life in danger, and he's capable of surviving the most trying of situations even if he doesn't always come out the other side without some damage. Even though Nico knew that he was at risk of fading away like a shadow, he was still willing to keep using his power for the sake of others. It did mean he developed a dislike for darkness but didn't stop him from using his shadow-travel ability again in the future when lives were on the line. Nico is also determined enough to talk his own father into lending a hand in a war he intended to sit out of.

As a kid who spent seventy years inside of a casino and never aging past ten, Nico's general education is severely lacking at times but he's quite intelligent in other ways. After learning about his Greek demigod status, he took it upon himself to find a way to learn as much about it as possible. He utilized his powers to summon the dead in order to learn to control them, discovered everything about the Underworld and was able to help others with his knowledge. Not only does he speak both English and Italian but also learned Ancient Greek and even a few Roman phrases after being introduced to the other demigod camp. There is much he doesn't know but Nico makes up for it by absorbing as much knowledge as he can whenever possible. Once upon a time, Nico was one of those kids who would have asked endless questions and still has that craving for knowledge.

Being a teenager is a rollercoaster of emotion at times and Nico has had it rougher than other kids his age. While he tries to downplay most of his feelings there is a side of him that's in pain and he can have something of a temper. For someone with his powers, he has to keep a tight reign on his feelings otherwise bad things happen such as him turning another demigod into a ghost and then banishing them into the Underworld for eternity. Or plants die or the dead rises from the ground. Once his sister told him that it's dangerous for a child of Hades to hold a grudge and Nico has proven that true on many occasions. Normally it's his negative emotions that have the most impact on his powers and he has a great deal of negative emotions. Once, an enemy pissed him off so much that Nico lost control and turned that person into a ghost - essentially killing him and sending him to the Underworld to face judgement for his crimes. Upon waking, he had completely forgotten the incident and had to be told by Reyna.

After traveling through Tartarus, getting captured by giants and nearly suffocating in a jar there's understandably some mental damage done. He now has a strong dislike for the dark and likely even severe trauma in the form of nightmares or memories. It is something that has been getting better and Nico surrounds himself with people who keep him from getting too lost in his own head but he is only a fifteen year old kid who's seen horrors normal kids don't. While he's sometimes successful in pushing aside the trauma, it's usually in times of urgency when there's a more pressing matter to deal with. For a time, Nico didn't talk about the things that troubled him but a few individuals have helped him open up to the point where he can talk about it. Considering the times he grew up in, he also had trouble admitting that he had feelings for another boy but has since come to terms with that even if Nico still won't use the actual term 'boyfriend'.

Nico is absolutely stubborn to the point of being reckless, pushing himself beyond the boundary of what his body can possibly handle. He knew the risk of using his abilities too much and yet he still did it until someone had to put a stop to it. It isn't just his own personal safety that Nico is stubborn about but he even felt as if there wasn't a place for him and he pushed away anyone who wanted to become his friend for several years. That is something he's working on but it isn't perfect yet and Nico has a ways to go yet. Sometimes he can be stubborn in the right or positive ways or just to be a little onrey, but he has been known to fixate on certain things to unhealthy extents at times. Even after seemingly accepting his sister's death, he tried to bring her back to the world of the living when given the opportunity - though only to find her to gone already. He's one of those people who is not easy to sway after his mind's made up. Not only is he willing to risk his life, but his mental sanity and emotional state to go back to Tartarus to save a friend. He was so fixated on saving Bob/Iapetus that he was almost obsessed with it - hearing a voice in his head and being unsure if it was real or if he was literally going mad. Nico refused to eat much and was forced into counseling sessions with Mr. D to determine who has dominion over madness itself.

Ever since Nico's second trip into Tartarus was a success, his negative emotions are now literally on display all of the time in the form of cacodemons - affectionately named the Cocoa Puffs. About a dozen of them were created by Nyx so all of his negative emotions are now fully personified in tiny black creature form. Fear, anger, sadness, loneliness, jealousy, defiance, guilt, shame, grief and half a dozen unnamed emotions now run about inflicting these emotions on Nico and other people they touched. Since their creation, Nico has started to learn to accept these negative emotions and work through them to find a place where he can be happy but not try to push aside or ignore his negative emotions. To grow beyond each moment of negativity and see the good that eventually came from it, or the good he could do with it going forward. Each of these emotions are attached to an experience that he can use to help both himself and others survive a bad moment in time to get to a better place.

These moments might still hurt and that will never go away, but by surrounding himself with light, love, and laughter these painful moments can get easier to deal with whenever they come up. This is not to say that the personifications of his emotions in the form of the Cocoa Puffs means that Nico doesn't still have these emotions within him, only that they now existed outside of himself as well. People do not get flashes of Nico's memories associated with the feeling when they touch a Puff, they get their own emotion and memories attached. It's up to Nico to make sure people are prepared for that to happen and he can even use them as tools to help others get past their own emotional blocks now that he has gotten used to handling his own baggage in a very literal sense. His experience in both Quests and suffering can help others get through their own pain, even as he still works through his own and can no longer fully hide it away. It's just there, for all to see in it's semi-adorable monstrous way.
